Kathleen Clements and Tommy Clements, Introduction by Mayer Rus
ID: 16276
Издательство: Rizzoli

The mother-and-son founders of powerhouse interior design firm Clements Design have mastered interiors of a spare yet sumptuous sophistication mixed with California ease that are highly sought after by a star-studded clientele, including Ellen DeGeneres, Adam Levine, Bruno Mars, Kendall Jenner, and Jennifer Lawrence.

In their first book, Clements Design showcases eight outstanding residences that embody the Clements style: understated elegance, sensuous austerity, Zen-like simplicity, easy glamour, and grand intimacy. Clements creates rarefied environments that are ultra-luxurious but never pretentious. Instead, their pared-down rooms are remarkably cozy and relaxed due to the blend of natural materials, muted colors, and matte surfaces and textures, especially from wood, stone, and nubby textiles—perfect for the indoor-outdoor lifestyle of their clients. A Clements home is the perfect backdrop for jaw-dropping art collections that may include Picasso, Morandi, Warhol, and Twombly, and for entertaining in spacious, expansive rooms populated by Rick Owens daybeds, Prouvé chairs, Giacometti light fixtures, Asian sculptures, and Persian rugs in pale shades, all blended with exceptional antiques carefully placed about the spaces. Serenity reigns over all, filling the viewer with a peaceful calm that is priceless.

Personal accounts of working with Clements Design and living in their interiors from, among others, Ellen DeGeneres and Adam Levine, complement the glorious photography. Eight Houses: Clements Design offers a simple life set in an environment of exceeding high style and taste.

Billy Cotton’s hand is deft and light, weaving together bold colour palettes, custom-designed furniture and lighting, and striking artifacts and works of art to achieve livable and easy interiors for today.

Cotton presents rooms that mix historical and modern influences, resulting in luxuriously sleek interiors for casual, yet sophisticated, living. The glamorous spaces — many designed for art-world clients, including Cindy Sherman and Lisa Yuskavage—are anchored in tradition but reflect the relaxed sensibilities of our time.

Furniture, lighting, wallpaper, tableware, and terra-cotta planters are part of his repertoire. Cotton’s industrial designs—like his interiors — embody an intelligence and understanding of design history. This book, the designer’s first, documents the groundbreaking work of a rising and notable talent and should be in the libraries of designers and connoisseurs of fine living.

Steven Volpe and Mayer Rus
ID: 14500
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book on the work of Steven Volpe, a designer acclaimed for his grand-scale, bespoke interiors and his impeccable craftsmanship that blurs the line between art and furnishings.

Steven Volpe combines a minimalist approach with a classical sensibility and a connoisseur’s appreciation for authenticity. Adept at mixing pieces from different periods — eighteenth-century pieces combine with midcentury furniture and contemporary art, for example — Volpe brings a richness to his modern interiors.

Volpe was one of the first to champion loft living, moving into a 75-year-old converted warehouse, but he brings his classical training into the modern spaces he favors. “I learned what was appropriate and proper, and now I, too, can break those rules,” he says. One of the ways Volpe breaks the rules is by melding art with decor in his interiors, endearing him to a sophisticated, artistic clientele.

This volume showcases ten recent projects, exploring work in a range of spaces, from New York City penthouses and modernist California homes to a traditional London townhouse. Each project displays Volpe’s refined sensibility and understated luxury, showing how he creates thought-provoking environments that quietly stimulate all the senses.

With stunning photography and in-depth essays by Volpe and Architectural Digest writer Mayer Rus, this handsome volume offers inspiration and ideas to designers, art lovers, collectors, and homeowners.

About the Authors:

Steven Volpe founded Studio Volpe in the 1990s in San Francisco. Studio Volpe has been published in Architectural Digest, the New York TimesWSJ: The Wall Street Journal MagazineElle Decor, and other international journals. Mayer Rus is the West Coast editor of Architectural Digest.

Grant Kirkpatrick, Duan Tran, Mayer Rus
ID: 17282
Издательство: Rizzoli

A highly anticipated monograph of recent houses by a leading California architecture and landscape firm that celebrates sophisticated modern living and represents the pinnacle of the California Dream.

Residing with Nature features one-of-a-kind homes, crafted in sensuous materials and dramatically sited to enhance views, sunlight, and nature in California, Nevada, and Colorado. Grant Kirkpatrick and Duan Tran of KAA Design share their process for creating personal environments that are tailor-made to each client’s unique lifestyle and setting. All the designs inform a dynamic connection to nature that links indoors and outdoors, an extraordinary attention to craftsmanship, an enduring use of local materials, a striking balance between geometry and whimsy, and an exhilarating sense of levitation.

KAA Design’s stunning houses exemplify why so many look to California as the mode of sophisticated modern living. Their houses are inspired by early California modernism and Asian traditions — and an homage to the work of architects like Rudolf Schindler who used a sophisticated, natural material palette. The Strand in Manhattan Beach rises out of a berm of seagrasses; the Tree House is nestled amidst an array of mature cork oaks, rare Torrey pines, and fragrant Southern magnolias, responding to the client’s longstanding connection to the site and their desire of a unique vision. The simple yet sophisticated design integrates geothermal, radiant-floor heating and cooling, PV energy systems, and solar water heating. Multiple views of each house and plan give readers inspiration and ideas for an excuse to daydream.

About the Authors:

Grant Kirkpatrick is the Founding Partner of KAA Design and has been designing houses in California and around the world for over thirty-five years.

Duan Tran is the Managing Partner and a Design Principal at KAA Design. He is a frequent speaker for several media events and an Executive Cabinet member of the Leaders of Design Council.

Brian Sawyer, John Berson, Mayer Rus
ID: 17212
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book from SawyerBerson illustrates the award-winning firm’s quintessential pairings of modernism and classicism in seaside houses, metropolitan residences, and spectacular garden retreats.

Treating architecture, landscape, and interior design as complementary endeavors, Brian Sawyer and John Berson have been ahead of their time and influential in the world of design since the founding of their eponymous partnership in 1999. SawyerBerson’s prodigious use of traditional and modern vocabularies has gained the firm widespread recognition and many notable clients. Meticulous attention to detail and versatility combine to create a wide variety of projects.

In the Hamptons, a modernist house of stone and glass lets in the sun and sea views while secluded by the dunes and drifts of native grasses. Another residence is built according to the pinwheel floor plans of early twentieth-century houses by Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright to accommodate four primary suites around a central common area with plenty of space for entertaining and individual relaxation. Yet another project, equally arresting, is a Colonial Revival cedar-shingled house and seaside landscape built for multiple generations. Whether restoring a historic Georgian Revival town house in Manhattan, designing a modernist residence in the country, or planning a garden by the ocean, the practice embraces traditional and contemporary styles with equal distinction.

About the Authors:

Brian Sawyer and John Berson — whose backgrounds are in landscape architecture and architecture, respectively — met when both were working at Robert A.M. Stern Architects. Their combined design philosophy guides SawyerBerson, an AD100 firm. Mayer Rus is the West Coast editor of Architectural Digest.

Richard Shapiro and Mayer Rus, Edited by Mallery Roberts Morgan, Photographs by Jason Schmidt
ID: 16343
Издательство: Rizzoli

In this exquisite monograph, designer and antiques dealer Richard Shapiro demonstrates the alchemy required to create a home that seems cultivated over many generations. Shapiro has mastered the art of crafting refined, cultivated spaces that transport their inhabitants to distant lands and past epochs. Designers and homeowners who wish to endow their homes with authentic European charm and character will be inspired by Shapiro’s gift for conjuring Old World savoir-faire.

The book focuses on Shapiro’s two magnificent, much-imitated homes, which provide a broad array of examples related to living graciously with antiques, replicating the aura of antiquity, and the complex challenge of marrying centuries-old building materials with new construction. Shapiro shares ideas from his work as a designer as well as lessons learned from years of collecting and selling antiques and fine art. As a manufacturer of furnishings with a distinctly European sensibility, he also brings to bear a thorough knowledge of production processes and finishing techniques based on Old World archetypes. With breathtaking new photography, the book functions as a master class, filled with illustrations and takeaways for readers, offering practical ideas and creative inspirations for channeling the glories of the past to enrich the present.

Author Madeline Stuart, Foreword by Mayer Rus, Photographs by Trevor Tondro
ID: 15792
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book from renowned Hollywood-based interior designer Madeline Stuart, whose elegant decorating is predicated on timeless design, be it modernist or traditional in inspiration.

Stuart is hailed as an icon in Los Angeles for her exceptional work. Architectural Digest wrote, "In a city driven by artifice and spectacle, Madeline Stuart celebrates understatement, authenticity, and elegance without affectation." The daughter of director Mel Stuart (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory) and a decorator mother whose interiors were favored by actors and entertainers, Stuart grew up as a Hollywood insider. Today, her wide-ranging clientele comes from the entertainment industry as well as the world of business and finance.

In No Place Like Home, Stuart herself writes eloquently about her recent work. With insight and wit, she walks the reader through her design process, from initial vision to execution. From her meticulous renovation of Cedric Gibbons's Streamline Moderne house to a newly built Montana ranch to a Mediterranean-inspired residence on the California coast, each project is informed by Stuart's keen understanding of history and craftsmanship as well as her skill with scale, proportion, and balance. These, along with her unexpected combinations of furniture and fine-art and decorative elements, result in richly layered interiors that feel authentic to their period and place, while remaining always relevant, modern, and beautiful.

About the Author:

Madeline Stuart is an AD100 and Elle Decor A-List interior and architectural designer whose work has been featured in numerous publications. In 1998, Stuart launched her own custom furniture, lighting, and accessories line, available at showrooms across the country. Mayer Rus is a design writer, editor, and critic. Drawing on examples of their own instantly recognizable Minimalist-inflected designs, often evoking the work of Donald Judd, celebrated architects Messana O’Rorke demonstrate how to create a serene haven for modern living.

Founded in 1996 by Brian Messana and Toby O’Rorke in New York City, Messana O’Rorke is renowned for crafting spaces of sublime restraint and ethereal beauty. Their process utilizes a rigorously limited palette of materials orchestrated in an architectural language of distilled boxes, blocks, and containers that emphasize the qualities of space itself rather than the things that fill it. The apparent simplicity and serenity of Messana O’Rorke’s designs belie the astonishing richness and variety of the experiences they nurture.

The architects’ projects span a wide spectrum of residential and commercial assignments in multiple geographies — city, country, mountain, desert, coastal. Yet even as they adapt their fundamental design vocabulary to address differences in program and context, Messana O’Rorke’s signature remains unmistakable in the ways they carve space and light. Their designs simultaneously foster both contemplation and invigoration, repose and action. There is no straining for theatrical effect, no tortured architectural calisthenics, simply a search for order, clarity, and beauty.

Following up on their much-heralded first volume of interiors, this new publication presents the next evolution of Atelier AM-virtuosos of mixing antiques and museum-quality artworks with pedigreed design.

"Alexandra and Michael Misczynski, the wife-and-husband team behind the Los Angeles-based AD100 design firm Atelier AM, are standard-bearers for the...concepts of quality and connoisseurship. Taking on very few projects each year, each Atelier AM home is a complete masterwork--where design and art are fully integrated into the architecture and landscape for a rich and immersive experience.

Written by Mayer Rus and David Wiseman and Susan Weber, Text by Bobbye Tigerman, Edited by Ari Wiseman
ID: 13257
Издательство: Rizzoli

An intimate look at this highly acclaimed and popular L.A.-based contemporary designer and artist, who marries old-world techniques with a modern twist, and is best known for his exquisite craftsmanship and detailed creations in bronze, porcelain, and crystal.

David Wiseman is one of the leading American designers of his generation. Produced in collaboration with the artist, this monograph offers an in-depth look at his work, through Wiseman's extensive archives, documents, and illustrations. The book features sketches and photographs of his unique sculptural objects and environmental installations that reveal a true portrait of the artist at work.

The book also shows readers many of his immersive creations that are in private homes and are rarely photographed. Wiseman's goal is creating work that brings nature indoors, ranging from small objects and sculptures to expansive installations. His signature Radial Branch chandelier, made of bronze and sculptured porcelain, is cast from fallen tree limbs he acquired on hiking trails in Los Angeles. His distinct patterns and motifs reveal his deeply rooted love of the natural world--which is evident in designs ranging from faceted-blown-Bohemian-glass crystal tumblers and porcelain vases to rugs, dining room tables, stools, and benches.

Lee Ledbetter, Mayer Rus
ID: 12696
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book from this celebrated American designer and architect known for creating spaces that balance historic detail and modern elegance.

The work of architect and interior designer Lee Ledbetter represents a one-of-a-kind combination of traditional details and chic Modernism. Lee Ledbetter established his practice in New Orleans in 1996 and has developed a body of work that emerges from his ability to incorporate historical precedent as well as regional and environmental context, and his firm has received recognition for its expertise well beyond its Deep South roots. Ledbetter's interiors and architecture combine a cleanly tailored and bright modernity with the unapologetic embellishments of refined and luxurious decoration. Ledbetter strongly believes design to be a fine art along with painting and sculpture, and he considers placement and scale of furniture, artwork, and lighting as carefully as he does the creation of walls and the spaces they contain. As Mayer Rus, who provides the text for this title, once wrote in House & Garden, "Lee Ledbetter rejects the idea that a serious architect cannot be a dedicated decorator as well."
